Thaal Sinestro is a prominent character in DC Comics, known primarily for his association with the Lantern Corps. He first appeared in Green Lantern (Vol. 2) #7 in 1961.
Originally a highly respected Green Lantern of Sector 1417, Sinestro was considered the greatest of his era. He was Hal Jordan's mentor. He believed in maintaining order through control, a philosophy that ultimately led him down a dark path.
Sinestro's tyrannical methods on his home planet of Korugar led to his expulsion from the Green Lantern Corps. He was banished to the antimatter universe where he encountered the Weaponers of Qward. These beings imbued him with a yellow power ring fueled by fear.
As the leader of the Sinestro Corps, wielding the power of fear, he became a major antagonist to the Green Lantern Corps and other heroes of the DC Universe. He often becomes an anti-hero and a villain who does not consider himself to be a villain.
